A 70-minute visual trip through the fairy-tale world of de Efteling.

When we were asked to visualise a 70 minute show about de Efteling performed by the world renowned Metropole Orchestra, to say we were excited is an understatement. We love the hand crafted worlds of Theme Park de Efteling, and thinking about them brings back all kinds of magical memories. With our visuals, we wanted to evoke these personal, nostalgic memories from the audience. Inspired by Indonesian shadowplays and German animator Lotte Reiniger we set out to create our own world of shadows and silhouettes.

The show consisted of 16 scenes referring to various fairy tales and theme park rides from de Efteling. For each scene, we developed a unique way of using shadows or silhouettes. Sometimes retelling the story of the scene, other times capturing the essence of a ride. Because we wanted to capture the hand crafted nature of the park, we lasercut over 1300 individual segments from wood, painted them and used moving lights to highlight the natural imperfections of the material. This resulted in a slow moving trip that was in perfect synchonization with the music during the show.
