THE LIGHT OF AMSTERDAM

We celebrated Amsterdam's 750th birthday with flying colors

AMSTERDAM 750

To mark the beginning of Amsterdam’s 750th birthday, a one-of-a-kind music concert was held in the legendary Ziggo Dome. GAIIA Studio had the honor to create the visual theme and background visuals for the show. To bring together all the different elements of this unique city, we created “The Light of Amsterdam”, a visual narrative that ran throughout the show and tied together many stories and experiences from the city.

White light contains all colors in the color spectrum. In the visual world built specifically for this concert, we used this phenomenon as a metaphor for Amsterdam: a place with 180 different cultures, a rich history and millions of individual stories, all bundled together in one city.

Each song of the concert had its own light-inspired visual. For one scene we filmed a light-object slowly exploring the city, for another we lit up 12 of the most iconic buildings of Amsterdam. It took us 5 months of filming, compositing, editing and programming to make every scene fit the show perfectly, and we can confidently say we’re proud of what we achieved.

Thanks to Making Waves, Metropole Orchestra, ISH Dance Collective, ZO! Gospel Choir and Amsterdam 750 for granting us the opportunity to work on this project.
